FOOD MILES

The Facts - Why they matter - What are they?
In simple terms, Food Miles are a straight forward way of illustrating how far the produce has travelled from the farm to the plate. With food and agriculture in general now accounting for nearly 30 percent of all transported goods on our roads, it is important that as consumers we begin to bear this in mind and think carefully about our purchasing habits. This travel has a major impact on our carbon dioxide emissions as a country, which in turn is a considerable contributor to climate change ultimately affecting us all - This is why FOOD MILES are so important.
The movement of live animals is also an important welfare topic. Now that
the export ban has been lifted, more of the UKs produce will be shipped
abroad, this has a knock on effect which will have consquences for all
consumers.
We, at The Fine Beef Company, are doing our part to provide you with
fresh, high quality, local meat, in turn it is up to you to purchase locally
produced goods. A considerable rise in the numbers of animals being ferried
around the country is in part down to larger, centralised abattoirs and
meat-processing plants and the fact that we are importing and exporting to
and from other countries.
Without knowing it you could be buying meat from the otherside of the world, can you guarantee how fresh it is and what standards have been met in the rearing of the animal?
We believe that as consumers, with less food miles we can be assured of better quality, fresher produce. With fresher produce come more nutrition and ultimately better taste!
At The Fine beef company we take our FOOD MILES responsibility very seriously. Our animals are transported from our farm to the nearest Organic abattoir and then straight back to our butcher, this keeps the FOOD MILES as low as possible and the quality as high as we believe can be achieved.
